Tributes to our dads and the games they taught us

Deb Kiekover
My Dad, the Jock, was blessed with three daughters before the son finally came. To make the best of it, he would go out at half time of football games and throw the football with us. During the seventh-inning stretch it was a baseball. Summer evenings included Basketball shooting, and later he coached our Softball team. While I was playing sports in high school, my Dad talked to the athletic director about why we couldn’t have prime time practices like the boys. That was the 60’s – unheard of! I believe that his positive model was the big reason I felt comfortable enough to pursue a career in the male dominated world of Athletic Training. Dad even learned how to hug over time. Thanks Dad — here’s a HUG for you.

Alec Boeve
My dad’s and my favorite sport is baseball. We love to watch the Tigers play on TV. My favorite sports memory with my Dad is when my dad, my sister and her boyfriend and I went to a Tigers game this past Memorial Day, and I got Gerald Laird’s and Johnny Damon’s autographs on my glove!

Ben Wilsey
My favorite sports memory with my dad was when we went to game 4 of the 2006 ALCS. This trip was a total surprise, I was told the day before the game that my Many men want to buy TAG HEUER REPLICA watches because their elegant and professional looks.dad and I were going. We sat down the left field line. The seats were great. When the game started we were so excited and nervous. As the game went on the Tigers were losing and we felt a little depressed and then when they finally scored we thought that they could win it. When Milton Bradley came chauvet lightup in the ninth The replica tag Heuer watches are very cheap, so you won’t have to worry much about the amount you will need to pay for tinning my dad and I were worried that he could put the A’s ahead because he was hitting well during the series. When we saw him fly out we felt so relieved. Then in the bottom of the ninth inning when we saw Magglio Ordonez come up to the plate I turned to my dad and said, “wouldn’t it be cool if he I was so sorry that I failed to buy my father a Cheap Rolex watches watch as his birthday gift last year.hit a Are you interested in buying watch replica, if you want, we can offer you more detailed information.walk-off homer?” When we saw him hit it we watched it to make sure that he hit it out of the park. I remember the next thing I did and that was hug my dad.

Lynn Schweibert
My father was an awesome person, athlete, teacher and coach. He even had a football field in Ohio named after him. I recall many memories. One came to mind today as to how he spent some hours trying to teach me to hit the softball to right field. To this day, when I come up to bat at Helder Park, my thoughts go to his teaching tips before I swing. HOWEVER, my hits to right are not frequent. But, my daughter who is on the same team, comes up to bat and hits to right field 80 percent of the time. Is this called osmosis or hereditary teaching? Thanks Dad, you were the best father anyone could have had. You mentored many a young person and impacted many lives. Mine being one ! I salute you on this Father’s Day! My father died in 1991.

Valentine’s Gift – ‘Smartbooks’

Smartbook

Still lingering over netbooks and notebooks for a Valentine’s gift? You will soon find yourself out. On Valentine’s Day 2010, a new guy will come to compete—the “smartbook”.

Smartbook is the concept of a mobile device that falls between smartphones and netbooks. Empowered with the features typically found in smartphones, smartbook has a slightly larger screen and a full keyboard. Smartbook is connected to the Internet via 3G cellular networks, always ready to call up a Web page or post an update on Twitter. Since it’s designed to be always on with all-day battery life, it delivers more convenience to users than netbook could. And compared to smartphone, a much bigger interface for playing videos on line makes it a bigger favor for big-screen lovers. This easy-to-take gadget is even smaller than netbook, probably only 8-10 inches. It’s a perfect Valentine’s gift option for those who want to take a mini laptop in handbags or briefcases, and those who always have to spend time on traveling.

Without microprocessors from Intel or operating systems from Microsoft, the smartbook will run versions of the Linux operating system and low-cost chips based on designs licensed by ARM Holdings PLC. Thus, the smartbook is expected to carry a much lower price than netbooks, probably $150-$250. Since this kind of mini laptops will have built-in cellular connections, they are more likely to be sold at subsidized prices by cellular carriers. Though the price is lower, the profit margins for manufacturers and laptop dealers could be much higher, due to the huge savings on chips and operating systems. Why not stock them up as chic gifts for lovers on Valentine’s Day 2010?

Spring/Summer 2010 Fashion Trends

spring-summer-2010-fashion-trends

It is believed that the current financial situation, although not completely freed of the economic downturn, will dictate a totally new framework for the future.

With this in mind, what will characterize the fashion scene for spring/summer 2010?

Starting with a clean slate and looking positively at the future, fashion designers, after working on the trends for spring/summer 2010, have released two main fashion trends in terms of colors and dresses: nature and popular appeal. They believe a neoclassic style will characterize 2010 and more well-known designs will take on new styles.

Ode to Nature
Paying homage to nature is a widely agreed subject in the fashion field. Natural and romantic appeal dominates this trend. To this base, a range of dynamic springtime colors are added: pink, greenish-yellow, orange and vibrant greens. Also, vegetation and natural motifs compliment traditionally dull dresses to show off dynamic and natural elements this season.

Popular Appeal
Clothes in cheerful but slightly faded colors that seem to have been softened in the washing machine are attractively making their way this season. Colors such as pale blue, faded beige, soft khaki and other similar colors are making a statement and appealing many fashionistas. High-waist and slim-bust jackets are being incorporated with jewel-like embroidery worn tops and mid-knee length, slim pencil skirts or Capri pants. The blend of retro-elegance tends to be a popular yet neoclassic choice.

See? Fashion pursuers “in the know” have been ready to challenge creativity and bend the barriers on the market, offline or online.

Our top 5 picks from Oxygen Boutique!

Since its opening last year, London boutique Oxygen has become a haven of fashion must-haves, stocking the best in independent labels and emerging designers.

Naturally, we never need an excuse to peruse the rails, so after a morning of doing just that we’ve selected our top five picks from the store.

1. alice + olivia Tribal Print Faux Wrap Dress, £295

The bright colours and bold print of this dress tick this season’s tribal trend in one stylish swoop, and we love how the delicate silhouette makes an easy throw-on piece for those sticky summer days.

2. Sea NY Leather Skirt, £295

This season’s favourite fabric is leather, and this brown Sea NY skirt with an elasticated waist is a simple but super-stylish way to wear it. We love how the tan shade plays on this season’s nude hues, too – plus, leather skirts are still hot next season, making this a great trans-seasonal piece.

3. alice + olivia Parachute Button Up Shirt, £165

Shirts are big news for summer, and we love the bright blue shade of this one by alice + olivia. Versatility is key – wear yours tucked into jeans, loose over shorts, as a cover-up on the beach or teamed with a luxe leather skirt.

4. Zimmermann Quiller Tube Bandeau Bikini, £120

Every girl needs a great summer bikini, and we love this bandeau style from Zimmermann. With ruched details in all the right places and a bold digital print to boot, it’s the perfect combination of feminine-meets-cool.

5. House of Harlow Mini Key Necklace, £43

Good things come in small packages, and in this case, prices. We can’t get enough of Nicole Richie’s jewellery, and this miniature gold key necklace is sleek and subtle way of making a statement.

Go shop the rails at Oxygen – we dare you not to find something.

Stella McCartney designs for Olympics

She may be pregnant, but that doesn’t stop Stella McCartney taking on a design challenge. The British designer’s just been appointed creative director of the Adidas 2012 Olympic Team GB collections.

She’s no stranger to the Adidas brand, of course, having designed a sportswear collection for label (Adidas by Stella McCartney) for the past five years, but it’s the first time a high-end designer has ever dressed athletes for the Olympic Games.

“As a British fashion designer it is an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be creative director of Team GB as the hosting nation of the London 2012 Olympic Games,” the designer told Vogue UK of her new role, which will see her design the kits for both the national Olympic and Paralympic teams.

But those of you hoping to get your hands on some suitably stylish sportswear for the games won’t be disappointed – she’s designing a fan wear range that’ll be available this autumn, too.

“Adidas is bringing together the best British athletes performing at the Olympic and Paralympic Games with the best British designer and we are thrilled to have someone of Stella’s stature working with us in the run up to London 2012,” Nick Craggs, marketing director of Adidas, said. “This is the ultimate fusion of performance and style and we are delighted to further our relationship with Stella in this way.”

We can’t wait to see what Stella’s got up her sporty sleeve.

Scorecard | Rick Owens Wins!

Rick Owens

When phrases like “post-apocalyptic androgyny” start cropping up in the reviews, you know Scorecard must be in Paris, that City of Light where men’s-wear designers have never been reluctant to engage in a little gender play. Thursday morning, La Roux got things rolling at Viktor & Rolf with a literally borrowed from Monsieur look for her performance, a theme later reversed by Alexis Mabille’s femmy floral appliqués. Yet when it comes to truly mind-bending performative subversions, critics concurred that Rick Owens’s boys who look like nuns in stripper heels carried the day.

Rick Owens
Designer: Rick Owens
Date and Location: Thursday, June 24, 8 boulevard de Bercy
Photos: slide show

  • “Owens’s menacing-yet-ladylike models proved you can be at once gender-bending and utterly manly.” (The Associated Press)
  • “It was all very dramatic.” (BBook.com)
  • “Rocked sheik-y head accessories, Tarzan-ish one-shoulder tops, and some curiously futuristic but totally badass Hefty-bag–meets-Clydesdale footwear.” (The Cut)
  • “This collection is another mix of seeming opposites: industrial yet ethereal; rugged yet fragile; devoid of color yet bold.” (GQ.com)
  • “Mr. Owens’s mix of the raw and the refined gets more powerful each season.” (International Herald Tribune)
  • “Owens mused, ‘There’s something poignant about people who devote themselves to a cause. I’m not there yet.’ Ah, but y’are, Rick, y’are.” (Style.com)
  • “A collection that felt distinctly puritan.” (Vogue.com UK)
  • “‘I wanted severe clothes made from beautiful fabrics,’ Owens said. Message heard, loud and clear.” (Women’s Wear Daily)

Alexis Mabille
Designer: Alexis Mabille
Date and Location: Thursday, June 24, 145 rue Saint-Honoré
Photos: slide show

  • “In these hard times for retail, the French designer went out on a limb with this collection of romantic, body-baring looks that looked to have been made for gender-bending flower children with poetic souls.” (The Associated Press)
  • “Alexis Mabille may be a secret ‘Hair: The Musical!’ fan.” (The Cut)
  • “With daisies in their hair and sand dunes in the mind’s eye, the models at the Alexis Mabille show were a world away from the smartly dressed men in bowties who jump-started the designer’s career.” (International Herald Tribune)
  • “Erred too far on the fey side.” (Style.com)
  • “Too precious for even the most self-assured dandy.” (Women’s Wear Daily)

Adam Kimmel
Designer: Adam Kimmel

  • “Working man meets post-Beat art star.” (GQ.com)
  • “Snoop Dogg joined the designer’s pantheon of outlaw heroes — and fashion muses.” (Style.com)

Balmain
Designer: Christophe Decarnin
Date and Location: Thursday, June 24, 44, rue Fran?ois 1er
Photos: slide show

  • “The ‘B’ for Balmain motif, half-covered by a rampant tiger, spelled out the once grand Paris couture house that the designer Christophe Decarnin has transformed into a hot property.” (International Herald Tribune)
  • “This phenomenon keeps rolling at retail, especially in the U.S., and perhaps that explains the American high-school references like the varsity jacket and the panther mascot T-shirts (holey, of course.)” (Women’s Wear Daily)

Dries Van Noten
Designer: Dries Van Noten
Date and Location: Thursday, June 24, 34 quai d’Austerlitz
Photos: slide show

  • “Skinhead chic.” (The Associated Press)
  • “We got a fairly radical change of direction at Dries Van Noten — from chic restaurant and art gallery to funky street and late night club.” (Fashion Wire Daily)
  • “This is ’80s Brooklyn meets Brussels (call it the BB-boy look).” (GQ.com)
  • “The show lacked the romance that is Dries at his best.” (Style.com)
  • “Intriguingly channeled skinhead style without resorting to too many punk clichés.” (Women’s Wear Daily)

Issey Miyake
Designer: Dai Fujiwara
Date and Location: Thursday, June 24, 11 rue Royale
Photos: slide show

  • “In the list of collections with the most bizarre inspirations, Miyake’s trout-themed show ranked right up there.” (The Associated Press)
  • “Mixes every print under the sun.” (The Cut)
  • “Proportion play meets technical precision.” (GQ.com)
  • “Intriguing was the sense of outfits made with hidden secrets, mimicking the fish’s ability to hide itself from predators.”(International Herald Tribune)
  • “While the result was too scattered to be considered one of [Fujiwara's] best, it still left the viewer with some striking images — and some winning outfits.” (Style.com)
  • “Quirky.” (Women’s Wear Daily)

Jean Paul Gaultier
Designer: Jean Paul Gaultier
Date and Location: Thursday, June 24, 325 rue Saint-Martin

  • “A show that faintly dripped with retro sensuality.” (The Associated Press)
  • “Virtuoso tailoring hidden in a provocative package.” (GQ.com)
  • “I thought for half a second … that [Gaultier] was also commenting on the European’s relationship to Saharan Africa.” (On The Runway)
  • “It was all quite elegant, of course, and also a bit subdued for JPG.” (Style.com)
  • “A collection that offered as many marvels as a teeming souk.” (Women’s Wear Daily)

Louis Vuitton
Designers: Marc Jacobs and Paul Helbers
Date and Location: Thursday, June 24, 5 rue Curial
Photos: slide show

  • “The luxury supernova looked east with a collection of sumptuous travel pieces embellished with Chinese touches that appeared aimed at its growing Asian customer base.” (The Associated Press)
  • “Patterns to lust for.” (BBook.com)
  • “A very patrician view of bohemia.” (Fashion Wire Daily)
  • “These are clothes made for a businessman shuttling between meetings and continents.” (GQ.com)
  • “The concept of cyberspace travel — going places without leaving your laptop — was the story behind the best show that designer Paul Helbers has done for Louis Vuitton.” (International Herald Tribune)
  • “Incorporated hints of a pan-global sensibility into a look that was still very Louis Vuitton — quietly luxe clothes for the well-heeled contemporary traveler.” (Style.com)
  • “Another must-see show.” (Vogue.com UK)
  • “A garden of earthly delights.” (Women’s Wear Daily)

  • “The design duo followed their retro vision to the letter and to the lapel (wide, sequined or piped bandleader fancy).” (International Herald Tribune)
  • “Viktor & Rolf’s design references are always quite explicit, but their application to the actual clothes can be somewhat obscure.” (Style.com)
  • “Laid back formal dressing.” (Vogue.com UK)
